Early Fascination with Tech
From a young age, Eugene was curious about building things and experimenting with technology. Fascinated by the technical world around him, Eugene was drawn to finding ways to incorporate technology into everyday life. This hands-on curiosity meant dabbling in multiple personal pursuits, such as automating his home and creating a personal cloud server, all of which laid the groundwork for a professional career in programming.
Finding Knovel
Eugene’s journey at Knovel began when he came across a recruitment post on LinkedIn. The mention of AI solutions and the potential to engage with the latest tools sparked his interest.
He was drawn by Knovel’s emphasis on innovation, which allowed him to apply new ideas to different domain sectors and the opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional colleagues within the company to build customised solutions for clients.
One of his most significant projects has been developing KAIROS, a knowledge management system enabling users to access and query private information securely. This project aligns well with Knovel’s commitment to revolutionising organisations transformation using cutting-edge technologies. He also had the opportunity to showcase the solution at the regional Milipol Asia-Pacific TechX Summit in 2024 to over 200 guests comprising various government agencies and tech firms.
Looking ahead, Eugene is thrilled about transitioning to more commercial-based projects where he will play a more critical role in the design phase. This shift will not only provide an opportunity to share ideas but also enhance his leadership skills. He shares, “Being involved in implementing these projects will sharpen my expertise and prepare me for future challenges.”
Navigating a Steep Learning Curve
Every new role comes with its challenges, and for Eugene, the transition from a back-end coder to an application software engineer will be significant. The learning curve has been steep; however, he quickly adapted by seeking guidance from his peers and immersing himself in self-learning. His cross-functional team members also helped him to see the projects from a macro perspective, giving him a deeper insight into how individual features impact the overall system.
While Eugene felt adept at adapting to new situations, he soon realised that maintaining flexibility is crucial for ongoing growth in a dynamic environment where projects change rapidly. This experience taught him that comfort can lead to inertia, so constant adaptation is key in a fast-paced environment like Knovel.

As time passed, the business steadily grew from strength to strength, and so did the number of colleagues joining the team. Eugene shared how he witnessed how the culture evolved alongside its strength, becoming more diverse and inclusive in the past year especially. He feels this encourages the team members to actively share ideas and tips to improve business efficiency. Furthermore, he feels safe and empowered to discuss his thoughts freely because his colleagues are friendly and supportive.
He adds that his relationship with his colleagues extends beyond work. He can count on them to advise him on personal and professional development to further enhance his growth as a software engineer.
