Meet Javier, One of Our Software Engineering Interns
In Javier’s final year pursuing a degree in the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Applied Artificial Intelligence, a job posting for a Software Engineering Intern position caught his eye. Recognising Knovel’s commitment to developing AI-driven end-to-end solution development, he knew that this was an opportunity to enrich his technical skills and contribute meaningfully to projects.
Transcending Expectations
While he had anticipated the internship to centre primarily on AI models and training, Javier found himself working on multiple stages across the entirety of a project – a tool enabling data scientists and software engineers to build AI-driven applications using machine learning, which is currently based on the cloud.
“From getting to know the infrastructure to the design, to implementation, this comprehensive exposure has been both eye-opening and enriching.”
Given his prior academic training focused on AI, gaining exposure to the full-stack development process unexpectedly sparked his interest in the field. From front-end to back-end development, Javier took on a range of responsibilities such as designing an intuitive, user-friendly leaderboard interface and creating back-end functionalities (like endpoints and Python libraries for API integration).
Memorable Milestones Achieved
Reflecting on his journey of growth and discovery, Javier recalls one task he was particularly proud of: Developing a base code for the Python library for the application. As this library facilitates essential task executions like GitLab file uploads and repository downloads (and even additional functionalities such as error handling and unit testing!), he felt that it was rewarding to have a hand in establishing such a foundation that ensures the reliability and maintainability of the project moving forward.
Not only did Javier work extensively on the project, but he also showcased his work during a presentation on the leaderboard interface he had worked hard on.
“Seeing my work integrated into the final application and displayed in front of the team was an incredibly fulfilling experience,” adds Javier.
A Strong Sense of Confidence and Belonging
Sharing that he naturally has a shy disposition, Javier was encouraged by the team’s welcoming atmosphere and nurturing environment where the team would offer their support whenever he faced challenges. This positive impression only deepened as he realised “just how genuine and approachable everyone was” and grew more comfortable over time.

Javier shares words of wisdom for potential interns considering working at Knovel, “Take advantage of the knowledge and support available to you.” Many opportunities are available for learning on-the-job, and Javier found invaluable feedback and support from his supervisor who would share resources for him to read up on as he built his prototype.
“The most important lesson I’ve learned here is not to hesitate to ask questions. Seeking clarification, even on what might seem like trivial doubts, is a key part of learning. What matters most is the knowledge and understanding you gain from asking.”

Keeping an Open Mind
Of course, staying open to learning new things helped him overcome significant challenges. Facing unfamiliar tools and languages like Golang for the first time, Javier thoroughly studied documentation to contextualise the tools’ usage, and drew comparisons between other languages he knew, such as Python, to acclimatise to the technologies.
In fact, the experience shaped his career aspirations for the better. Initially intending to be an AI Engineer on back-end processes after graduating, Javier credits the internship for broadening his perspective and shifting his aspirations towards becoming a full-stack engineer competent in both front-end and back-end tasks.
Describing his internship as “fulfilling”, he quips, “Knovel’s supportive environment sets it apart from other companies.”
