Meet Donovan, our Software Engineering Intern
Bearing a strong passion for interactive simulation, Donovan found himself pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in Real-Time Interactive Simulation at the Singapore Institute of Technology and DigiPen Institute of Technology.
From Interactive Simulations to Software Solutions
Even though he saw the internship departed from his academic focus, Donovan found the company’s blend of software development and AI solutions compelling. He also saw that an internship at Knovel meant he could build real-world solutions and contribute meaningfully, a stark contrast to the anonymity of a larger corporation. At the same time, he was also drawn to Knovel’s youthful, dynamic atmosphere.
Diving Deep into Video Solutions
His primary responsibility involved the backend development of a video management systeml. He meticulously crafted API endpoints and the intricate logic that connected various services. However, it was a video analytics application using NVIDIA’s DeepStream SDK – one that he created – that stood out the most to him during his time as an intern. The sheer accessibility of this powerful technology, and the satisfaction of seeing his creation function flawlessly, filled him with a sense of accomplishment he hadn’t anticipated.
One of his most memorable milestones was witnessing his backend work seamlessly integrated into the UI, a tangible manifestation of collaborative effort.
He recognised how Knovel’s culture is a “play hard, work hard” environment, witnessing the team’s inclusive lunches and casual snack breaks that doubled as mini teambonding moments. However, he was also pleasantly surprised by the company’s friendly and welcoming culture, marked by genuine concern for employees’ well-being, both professional and personal.
Learning by Doing: A Hands-On Approach to Engineering Growth
During his internship, Donovan’s most valuable lesson was the importance of meticulous planning. He recounted a frustrating experience in optimising a component without fully understanding the underlying settings, which ended up costing significant time. This taught him that thorough research and foresight are essential in software development. His internship significantly shaped his career aspirations, providing invaluable insight into the realities of solution development and solidifying his future career goals.
He also encountered challenges, particularly in navigating unfamiliar third-party libraries. To overcome these, he adopted a fresh perspective and sought guidance from his supervisor.
Knovel supported his growth by encouraging him to explore new areas of software development. The freedom to choose project assignments aligned to his interests and learning objectives gave him both motivation and a sense of ownership, further solidifying his career aspirations.
Surprises and Successes of an Internship
Donovan shared that Knovel’s relatively young and new company status was one of the factors that drew him to apply as an intern.
“I felt I could make a noticeable contribution and learn much more within a smaller organisation compared to larger MNCs, which I did.”
And grow he did, the depth of technical knowledge he acquired surpassed his initial expectations. He believes Knovel’s willingness to provide interns with space to explore and grow was a significant factor in creating a positive learning environment.

His favourite memory was the a teambonding workshop organised around learning cultural dragon dance, an event he initially approached with scepticism but ultimately found enjoyable and enriching. It fostered camaraderie and revealed unexpected common interests among his colleagues, from shared enthusiasm for esports to hidden musical talents.
A fun fact about Donovan? He grew up with seven huskies and harbours a deep passion for history, often immersing himself in documentaries and video essays. When not interning, he enjoys video games, tabletop games, socialiszing with friends, exploring investment options, and occasionally indulging in sweet desserts.

His advice to future interns? Don’t be afraid to try. Even without relevant academic background, a passion for tech and AI will make up for it. The internship offers invaluable technical skills and exposure that surpasses traditional academic learning . If he had to summarise his internship experience in one word, it would be “slay,” a testament to his growth, accomplishments, and the overall positive experience.
