Beyond The Office: Navigating the Worlds of Innovation and Adventure

Meet Michelle: The Analyst with a Wanderlust Spirit

In today’s interconnected world, the importance of networking and building meaningful relationships cannot be overstated. For analysts like Michelle, this combination of work and personal passion plays a pivotal role in shaping their careers. Often finding herself in the midst of both local and international start-ups, Michelle embodies the spirit of curiosity, innovation, and connection—qualities that drive her both in her professional responsibilities and her adventurous trips abroad (from Kyrgyzstan and beyond!).

She describes herself as “an Analyst by day, and a weekend wanderer and aspiring coffee connoisseur by… well, also by day.”

“I love meeting new people, from cab drivers to coffee shop owners, and I think that’s really carried on to how I approach work.”

Michelle’s professional journey is deeply intertwined with her passions. Her love for travel not only fuels her curiosity about the world but profoundly impacts her approach to work, emphasising the connections she makes along the way. She often dives into the intricacies of tech analysis, scouting for the latest innovative start-ups across different domains.

Blending Work with Passion

Michelle’s background in corporate innovation laid the groundwork for her role. This previous experience equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of how organisations could be enhanced with new solutions and ideas, while igniting a desire to engage deeply with specific challenges.

Her decision to join Knovel was inspired by the company’s commitment to meaningful innovation. As she aptly puts it, “What’s been most fascinating is understanding how real-world innovation works. It’s really about understanding the interplay of factors behind-the-scenes, and trying to find the right product-use case fit.”

“Innovation’s not just about really cool ideas. It’s about making sure there’s a good fit to the use case.”

At the Crossroads of User Needs and Innovation

As an analyst, Michelle wears many hats, with the primary focus on enhancing public safety through innovation. While she does not think there is really a typical day at work, she often works with end-users to define their problem statements, then scouting for the “really cool technologies” that could address these. She also supports meetings and trials, all in the name of making sure the end-users find a good fit to their operational challenge.

“I think the most memorable moment at work’s got to be boarding an oil tanker in the middle of the sea. Well, it wasn’t just to test whether I could climb up a rope ladder, but it was really to understand the operational context of one of our end-users.”

Through these roles, she has gained valuable insights into the complex interplay of technology and public safety innovation. The lesson she treasures most is recognising how interconnected all components are to effectively respond to challenges, emphasising the importance of strong relationships in driving innovation.

Celebrating The Team’s Cultures and Milestones

Michelle shares, “Something really interesting is the diversity of experiences, and even how multi-cultural we are. We try to celebrate each other’s customs, traditions and festivals, and that’s also how we celebrate milestones here – lots of food, and drinks.”

Celebrating the team’s successes in a lively, communal manner, such shared moments foster team spirit and highlight the collective achievements within the company.

Yet, like any role, challenges arise. Michelle particularly highlights grasping the nuances of ambiguity in her analytical work.

“One thing I’ve learned is that not having all the answers is part of the job, and it’s fine.
It’s really about exploring, asking the right questions, and connecting the dots.
That’s how the real magic happens.“

By embracing uncertainty, she explores solutions through collaboration and curiosity, which ultimately enhances her work’s effectiveness.

Balancing Act: Michelle’s Take on Work-Life Harmony

In a world that often glorifies busyness, Michelle offers a refreshing perspective on her approach to work.

“It’s easy to get caught up with being busy, but what I’ve realised is that we should be prioritising impact, focusing on what moves the needle.”

She draws a metaphorical distinction between glass balls and rubber balls to illustrate her approach to managing professional and personal responsibilities:

  • Glass Balls: These represent critical tasks and commitments that must be prioritised and handled with care.
  • Rubber Balls: Tasks that are less critical and can be dropped occasionally without long-term repercussions.

By discerning which tasks fall into each category, Michelle successfully navigates the demands of her career.

The Power of Curiosity and Connection

Michelle’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of curiosity and connection, both in her professional role as an analyst and her personal travels. By exploring new places and conversations, she continuously gathers insights that not only fuel her passions but also enhance her professional contributions.

Sharing her advice for prospective joiners, she says, “If you’re looking to join the team, come in with an open mind and willingness to contribute.”

The more you put in, the more you’ll get out of the experience.

Her journey underscores that fostering key relationships and embracing innovation can lead to extraordinary outcomes, not just in one’s career but also in life’s broader adventures. Through her experiences, Michelle exemplifies that in both work and travel, making new connections can lead to remarkable growth and discovery.
