Redefining Training with Empathy and Intelligence

The Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board in Singapore recently made headlines by using AI to improve its call centre services and prioritise support for less digitally literate users. Bringing the Avatar to Life

Our solution centres around a lifelike AI-powered avatar designed to simulate natural, emotionally intelligent conversations. Unlike traditional chatbots, this avatar is capable of expressing empathy, adapting to user responses, and navigating nuanced, complex scenarios with sensitivity and tactfulness.

What made this project especially meaningful was our decision to base the avatar after one of our team members. The result is not only relatable but also engaging. Watching our customers interact with the avatar and then meeting the real-life person whose image it was based on has brought unexpected moments of laughter and connection. Such details lend a touch of personality to our tech, beyond simply providing a solution or service.

Why Traditional Training Falls Short

This project was initiated to solve several persistent training challenges faced by our client’s customer service teams. Despite best efforts, the organisation continues to rely on static, one-size-fits-all training models that do not fully prepare staff for the emotional and situational complexities of real-life interactions.

One major issue is the lack of realism in conventional training methods. Classroom learning and scripted roleplays often fail to replicate the intensity and unpredictability of genuine customer encounters. As a result, staff members may leave training sessions feeling underprepared when faced with high-pressure situations in the field.

Another challenge lies in the inconsistency of human-facilitated training. Depending on the instructor or location, staff may receive varying levels of guidance, which can result unequal skill development across teams. This inconsistency affects employee performance, and ultimately service quality and customer satisfaction.

Lastly, without adequate exposure to scenarios that could be emotionally challenging, staff may struggle with stress and confidence when handling real customers. These gaps can affect not only how effectively they perform, but also how they are perceived by their customers.

A Smarter, More Human Approach to Training

To address these gaps, we developed a digital training solution that uses an AI avatar to simulate real-world customer interactions. The design incorporates emotionally intelligent dialogue, adaptive responses, and scenario-based situations, all tailored to build both confidence and competence.

The avatar engages users in sensitive conversations, such as responding to distressed customers or managing complaints. Staff practice responding with empathy, professionalism, and clarity, as these key skills cannot be easily taught through static content or passive instruction.

Because the training is delivered digitally, it ensures consistency across the organisation. Every staff member, regardless of location, receives the same high-quality learning experience. The platform also supports on-demand access, allowing users to revisit scenarios and practice at their own pace, which is particularly useful for new hires or those seeking to refresh their skills.

Most importantly, the training simulations are grounded in realistic, complex interactions. The avatar mimics diverse customer behaviours, emotional tones, and service requests, enabling staff to rehearse responses in a safe, low-risk environment that prepares them for the real world.
